In today's society many of us lead very inactive lives. A lot of us work at our desks for eight hours a day, and then when we get home, we feel too tired to do anything else. With our sedentary lifestyles these days, it is very important to keep our weight under control. Many people choose diets that can work quickly, but as soon as they stop the diet, the pounds also return. Doing a few small steps for long-term improvement can be a much better way to improve fitness levels.

Two of the most important ways to improve our lifestyles is by eating the right type of food and increasing our body's metabolic rate. A lot of people eat the wrong type of food, which is often convenience food containing high levels of fat. Take a careful look at the diet and try and eliminate the high fat content.

Convenience foods contain a lot of fat, so making your own lunch at home can be a much better alternative. Choose low-fat meats such as chicken and turkey without the skin, and other types of meat by removing any excess fat. Vegetables and salad are vital to our digestive systems, so try and increase the amount you eat each day so that you have at least five different types of salads, vegetables and fruit.

The metabolic rate of our bodies also needs to be increased. This can be done by going to the gym, but it can be quite time-consuming. Start improving the exercise rates by doing small changes such as using staircases, walking instead of using the car where possible and going out for walks at the weekend with the family. As you increase the speed and frequency of any exercise, it will start burning more of the body's fat and leading to a loss of weight.

Many of the drinks we have each day contain a lot of sugar. Try and reduce the amount of sugary drinks each day, and start drinking water instead. Drinking water helps to fill the stomach which leads to us eating less, as well as improving many of our bodily systems which leads to an improvement in health.

Finding sensible ways to lose weight is vital to our health. Many specialist diets work well at the time, but when you stop using them, the pounds pile on. By making sensible changes over a longer period, it should be possible to keep weight gain to a minimum.
