Every day many of us think about that excessive weight we have accumulated over the years or even over the course of a holiday. We want to get rid of it and we often make plans, but most of us never lose any. So, what to do?
The first thing that you need to do before you start making plans for a successful weight loss is to think about the timing. It is important to ask yourself if this is the right time. What motivates you now? The reason that leads you to the decision must be personal to you. Whatever you decide, make sure you are feeling positive and ready for the challenge.
The second thing you have to do is to set realistic goals. To lose weight and keep it off requires effort. You will need to make lasting changes to your diet and find sufficient time for physical activity in your schedule. Think about your daily routine. Keeping a diary may help you to identify patterns in your eating behaviour and help you to find the right timing for your new exercise routine. Keep in mind: drastic lifestyle changes will be difficult to maintain over time.
Aim to lose about five per cent of your initial body weight over a month, for example. Research shows this kind of weight loss must be achievable by a generally healthy person. Once you have reached your goal, congratulate yourself with a field trip, for example, and set another five per cent weight loss target. This way, you will feel good about achieving small steps, rather than driving yourself crazy because it is taking you so long to lose a large amount of weight.
Sticking with it is another important aspect of a successful weight loss. You may lose more weight in some weeks than in others. Don't get frustrated or angry. Think of the possible reasons. May be your muscles finally started to grow and because of that you weight stays the same for weeks. Or maybe you started having a lot of water and your body contains fluids because you often have salty foods. The most important thing is not to worry as long as your weight continues to decrease overall. If your weight stays the same for over 3 weeks, don't abandon all you have achieved. Instead, focus on the calorie intake and portion sizes. Sometimes, short crash diets or very strict diets can help you to move your weight further down.
